AMD’s previous Threadripper line-up includes the 24-core Threadripper 3960X and 32-core Threadripper 3970X. The Threadripper 3990X is the world’s first consumer desktop processor to feature 64 CPU cores and 128 threads, which is purpose-built to enable extreme performance for 3D, visual effects, and video professionals. With up to 288MB of combined cache, the 3990X sports a base clock of 2.9 GHz with support for boost speeds up to 4.3 GHz per core. This 280W TDP brings support for DDR4-3200 RAM and offers tons of PCIe Gen 4 lanes (~128). The 3990X delivers up to 51% faster-rendering performance than the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X processor5. According to AMD, its new Ryzen Threadripper 3990X processor scored a whopping 25,399 points in Cinebench R20 (multi-threaded) bench. During the CES 2020 presentation, AMD also teased a V-Ray benchmark load of a scene from the recent Terminator film: Dark Fate, which the 3990X took one hour and three minutes to complete, while the dual Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 processors (combined 56C/112T) in comparison took 1 hour 30 minutes. This means that the 3990X is apparently 30% faster than dual Intel Xeon 8280s. With the pair of Xeon processors offering only 56-cores and 112 threads and costing more than $20,000, the 3990X processor is definitely worth a steal at $3,990. The AMD Threadripper 3990X will be available globally from February 7, 2020, for $3,990.
