Morgan, staring Kate Mara and Paul Giamatti, is a sci-fi thriller about scientists who have developed a synthetic humanoid whose potential has grown dangerously beyond their control. To prepare the machine for the task at hand, the IBM Research system analysed hundreds of horror/thriller movie trailers. In order to get an idea of the dynamics of a trailer, the computer then performed a series of visual, sound and composition studies. After learning what keeps audiences on the edge of their seats, the AI system searched through the entire Morgan movie. It was basically able to perfect the visual landscape of the film and determine if it was looking at a moment that was scary or happy. Then, it made a series of attractive graphs before isolating 10 scenes totalling to six minutes of video for a trailer from the movie. While IBM’s AI reduced the process to only 24 hours, a human editor still had to patch the scenes together to tell a logical story. In comparison to the typical timeframe that generally requires anything between 10 to 30 days to complete a trailer, this is a huge improvement. Here’s the trailer created by Watson
