On July 13, Switzerland-based Voat posted on Twitter at midnight (GMT) that it was being struck by an ongoing “layer 7 DDoS attack”. A bit more detail was added to its website: “In case you were wondering why most third party apps for Voat haven’t been working for the last 8 hours or so – we are under DDoS. Again,” Voat wrote citing a CloudFlare support engineer. “In order to keep Voat at least somewhat responsive, we’ve bumped up CloudFlare security settings which essentially breaks most Voat third party apps currently on the market....

The proposal paper which has been posted online, Success As A Knowledge Economy, is aimed at reforming further education in the UK, which would also include a raise in the current $13,000 tuition fees in line with inflation from next year. The paper proposes drastic reforms to the current educational setup in United Kingdom universities. Facebook basically sends only one notification per birthday to users. It also sends emails only to those users who have opted either actively or passively to receive them. However, over the last one month, few users have reported a huge increase in notifications from the website, sending multiple pokes over various media to wish happy birthday to friends. While many suppose that the change was intentional, or probably a form of user experience testing, as with so many of the site’s undocumented changes, it was seemingly an unusual accident....
The ICO had issued a Notice of Intent to Fine to Facebook in July following an investigation into the company’s data sharing policies that exploited the data of 87 million users. “The ICO’s investigation found that between 2007 and 2014, Facebook processed the personal information of users unfairly by allowing application developers access to their information without sufficiently clear and informed consent, and allowing access even if users had not downloaded the app, but were simply ‘friends’ with people who had,” the ICO said confirming the fine....
If this was not enough, Facebook now has been embroiled in a new controversy for collecting users’ contacts, text messages, and call history data through the Facebook app installed on Android devices for the past several years. Citing several users tech site Arstechnica said that when the users’ requested for a Facebook archive, they were provided with a ZIP file to download, which on downloading had complete logs of incoming and outgoing calls and SMS messages sent and received between 2015 and 2017....
The “Data Abuse Bounty” program, which is the first of its kind in the industry, has payouts starting at $500 and going up to $40,000 for big discoveries, although the company noted that there’s no maximum amount for the payouts. “We committed to launching this program a few weeks ago as part of our efforts to more quickly uncover potential abuse of people’s information. The Data Abuse Bounty, inspired by the existing bug bounty program that we use to uncover and address security issues, will help us identify violations of our policies,” Collin Greene, Head of Product Security, wrote in a blog post, late on Tuesday....
The ruling came in the matter of a shopping website using the Facebook Like button on its website. The court banned has banned it from using the Like function on its pages if it did not first warn customers their data was being recorded. The retailer will now be forced to warn users that ‘liking’ the site on Facebook grants permission for the company to log their IP address. The Fashion ID site, run by the Peek & Cloppenburg brand, was warned that it could be fined 250,000 euros ($275,000) for every breach of the order, seen by AFP....
Facebook is finally focussing on a second research center on new artificial intelligence laboratory in Paris after building a dedicated artificial intelligence team or popularly known as AI team that are spanning its offices in New York and Silicon Valley. The Paris AI lab will be made up of six researchers with expertise in image processing, text analysis, speech recognition and real-time strategy games. The new Facebook AI Research (FAIR) team will also work with existing teams in New York and California....

According to court documents filed by NSO Group, two Facebook representatives had approached NSO in October 2017 and asked to purchase the right to use its surveillance software ‘Pegasus’ to monitor users on Apple devices. “The Facebook representatives stated that Facebook was concerned that its method for gathering user data through Onavo Protect was less effective on Apple devices than on Android devices. The Facebook representatives also stated that Facebook wanted to use purported capabilities of Pegasus to monitor users on Apple devices and were willing to pay for the ability to monitor Onavo Protect users,” says a declaration made by NSO CEO Shaley Hulio....

The FBI program called IDLE (Illicit Data Loss Exploitation) aims to confuse fraudsters and corporate spies by focusing on using ‘decoy data’ to make it difficult for malicious hackers from stealing the company’s valuable information, according to a report from Ars Technica. “We have agents in every field office spending a large amount of time going out to companies in their area of responsibility establishing relationships,” Long T. According to TheNextWeb.com, the app is similar to Who Unfollowed Me for Twitter, which tells the users when friends have disappeared from their list and whether they have deactivated their accounts or actually deleted the user. When the users download the app it will not show them friends who have deleted them in the earlier period. It only starts tracking from the time the user activate it.
