The search giant has announced a post-quantum key-exchange algorithm called ‘New Hope’ that has been enabled in Chrome Canary. It is a type of testing ground for browsers and is currently being experimented on only a small fraction of connections between desktop Chrome and Google’s servers alongside current security measures. The Google Play Store malware implant and surveillance project was launched by a joint electronic eavesdropping unit called the Network Tradecraft Advancement Team, which includes spies from each of the countries in the “Five Eyes” alliance — the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia. The top-secret document, obtained from the former NSA contractor whistleblower Edward Snowden, was published Wednesday by CBC News in collaboration with The Intercept....

For the unaware, NSA has until now officially shared its own software tools only with government agencies, secret services, and other countries. Dubbed as GHIDRA, the software reverse engineering framework is developed in Java and has a graphical user interface (GUI). It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The union members said that the cyber attack was allegedly carried out by online hacktivist collective Anonymous. There are indications the attack on our website was orchestrated by a group identifying themselves as “Anonymous” who have a history of targeting police websites across the country,” wrote the union’s president Roy Richter, in a letter to members. In addition to Tor, the malware was also distributed through pirated softwares hosted on many torrent sites. However, F-Secure believes the OnionDuke family is much older and linked to MiniDuke, since they have found evidence to suggest that the samples they have analyzed are actually version 4 of the malware. Researchers haven’t yet identified any of the older versions, but the timestamps on the oldest OnionDuke binaries they have analyzed were from July 5 and July 15, 2013....
