Popcorn Time uses BitTorrent’s P2P technology and enables you to stream content without having to wait for the download to complete, making it easy for you to watch your favorite films and television series. The content is downloaded in a secret folder on your hard drive and gets deleted on system reboot. Another alternative is Stremio has been around for a while, it is not all that popular. Stremio is an application built with Electron that streams and plays TV shows, movies, TV channels, and YouTube channels, from torrents. So far, it has successfully managed to go past beyond Popcorn Time was doing and is doing a good job of staying alive giving an indication that it is likely we may see more of it in the near future. While it is significant to note that using Stremio is illegal in some countries because of the content it deals in. The main reason Popcorn Time was taken down by the entertainment industry was due to streaming torrents. It is expected that Stremio may face the same kind of resistance, sooner or later. Stremio comes with clients for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X, just like Popcorn Time. No installation is necessary for the Linux version, as it is just an archive that contains the working application. Besides offering movies, TV shows, YouTube channels, and TV channels, the application also automatically downloads subtitles and can even cast the content to AppleTV, Smart TV (via DLNA), Chromecast, and mobile devices. Another newness is the support for add-ons, and a few are already available and can bring even more content to users. The application is not open source, it is just free. While the source code is not available, it already has a GitHub entry that is used only for add-ons.
